John Maine agreed to minor league contract with Miami Marlins-MLB Update
Miami Marlins ink a minor league agreement with the veteran starting pitcher, John Maine.
The move apparently reflects plan of the club to nurture prospects in their farm system that have recently been acquired.
The Marlins earlier slashed their payroll by getting rid of star players through trades.
As a result, they obtained a great number of minor leaguers that have potential to become quality major leaguers.
In order to polish their talent, some veterans are required in the farm system. It appears Maine has been chosen by the Marlins for doing this job.
Maine has been playing at the major league level for the last many years.
Though more or less a mediocre starting pitcher, the experience that he possesses can be extremely valuable for the young players.
He will be trying to take the opportunity of playing for the Marlins' minor league as the beginning toward redefining his career.
After being unable to achieve anything substantial for years, the Marlins can prove to be a place where he clinches what he has never attained before.
While the Marlins may want Maine to focus more on fine-tuning the skills of the minor leaguers, he can set a different objective before him.
For example, the idea of being named as one of the major league starters for the team during the upcoming season can be more attractive for him.
Regardless of whether he plays for the Marlins or not, the contract signed is a new hope for Maine.
He can find some actions down the line and play competitive baseball.
The fact he has been invited to Spring Training by the Marlins means that he can be asked to throw against the quality major league oppositions.
As for the chances of success for the Marlins during 2013, expectations are low.
Starved of experienced campaigners on their roster, they will most probably go through another lacklustre season.
Except for Giancarlo Stanton, they have hardly anyone on their roster that can be looked upon for stand out shows.
The fans of the club know the reality as they criticise management for not doing enough during the offseason to make the team competitive.
