John Mallinger on song for his first PGA title
John Mallinger is still searching for his maiden PGA Tour win since the last seven seasons but the drought might just be over, as Mallinger leads the Frys.com Open by two strokes with just one round to play.
Mallinger could not shoot a low round on Saturday but managed one-under 70 on a day when everybody else found it going tough.
On Friday, John dazzled the field by carding a nine-under to equal the course record but, on Saturday, the American never really got going.
"I just didn't have it all. I didn't drive it as well as I did yesterday," Mallinger said. "I think I hit every fairway yesterday, and then today I just got off to a weird start".
He added, "But I hung around there and made some birdies on the back nine that got me back into position. Still got lead, still got a good spot, and look forward to tomorrow".
Winless since the past seven seasons, John started the round slowly but soon got in to his groove. It was not a flawless round, as he scored two bogeys as well.
However, two birdies on the back nine ensured that he goes on to the final day with a two shot advantage.
"I'm going to still stay aggressive and try to make as many birdies as possible," Mallinger said. "It's going to be a birdie day. I mean, it's supposed to be nice tomorrow".
Not only Mallinger, but everybody else, found it tough going on Saturday for some reason. Nobody looked as sharp as they were seen in the last couple of days.
The Swede, Jonas Blixt shot a decent score of five-under 66 and is two shots adrift of the leader. He too is searching for his first title on the PGA tour.
The world number 115th has probably the best chance to earn a victory at CordeValle. A good round on Sunday will do plenty of good for Jonas.
Blixt has recently been on a birdies spree and here at CordeValle, too, he has shot three decent scores. Even if he matches up his third round’s performance on Sunday, then there is a big chance for a victory.
