John Mayberry Jr. shines as Philadelphia Phillies rout Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ centre-fielder, John Mayberry Jr. had a brilliant day with the bat as he hit two RBIs including a two-run homer and went 1-for-4 in the Phillies’ 4-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on August
18.
The batters looked immobilised during first inning as they were unable to hit some scoring shots. At the top of first inning, Justin Upton flied out, Ryan Roberts popped out and Willie Bloomquist grounded out without the addition of even a single run. Similarly,
Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley and short-stop Jimmy Rollins both struck-out and Mayberry Jr. fouled out at the bottom of first inning.
Phillies’ batters took one run in the second inning to give their team a 1-0 lead. Wilson Valdez drove a double-run shot to deep right-field, Raul Ibanez scored one run and Brian Schneider occupied third base to end the second inning. Phillies got a 3-0
lead at the bottom of third inning when Mayberry Jr. struck a two-run homer (375 feet) towards left-field and Rollins contributed a single run.
In the fourth inning, the pitchers again delivered some tricky throws and stopped the runs. Phillies’ starter Vance Worley and reliever David Herndon both were superb with their pitching as they pitched combined six innings and permitted only two hits with
six strike-outs jointly. Worley threw his respective three innings with an ERA of 2.76 while Herndon pitched three innings with an ERA of 3.79.
Herndon joked, “I'm a failed starter. I try not to overthrow. Early in the season, I was trying to throw 95 (mph) all the time. Now I'm just trying to stay down in the zone.”
Diamondbacks’ manager, Kirk Gibson commented on Ian Kennedy and said, “He just made a couple of mistakes. The pitch to Mayberry was down the middle and he blasted it.”
Ibanez drove a double-run shot towards deep left-field and Utley scored the final run for Phillies to give them a 4-0 lead, at the bottom of fifth inning. Sixth and seventh innings remained score-less while during eighth inning, Diamondbacks’ batters broke
their silence by scoring one run and reduced their lead 4-1.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer (421 feet) towards centre-field to post the first or last run for Diamondbacks. As a result, Phillies sealed the three-game series 2-1 after winning the series finale at their home-ground.
