John Mayberry Jr. sparks as Philadelphia Phillies defeat San Francisco Giants 9-2 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ outfielder, John Mayberry Jr. had a brilliant day with the bat as he hit two RBIs with a two-run homer and went 2-for-5 in the Phillies’ 9-2 victory against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, San Francisco on August 5.
Giants got off to a quick start and posted one run to take a 1-0 lead as they wanted to overcome the last game’s mistakes. Jeff Keppinger posted the first run for the Giants when Pablo Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field. The pitchers won the
batter-pitcher competition during the second and third inning as they did not give away any run to the batters.
In the second inning, Orlando Cabrera singled to left-field but Nate Schierholtz struck-out swinging and Cabrera got out to second base on the double-play grounder of the Giants’ catcher Eli Whiteside. Phillies also missed some runs on the tricky pitches
during the third inning.
Phillies blasted four runs to get off the mark in the fourth inning and went ahead straight away with 4-1 lead. Shane Victorino hit a solo homer (385 feet) towards left-field to contribute the first run for the Phillies. Raul Ibanez hit a grounder into fielder’s
choice to second base and Chase Utley scored a single run. Then, Mayberry Jr. homered (405 feet) to left-field and Ibanez posted one run to complete a four-run campaign.
At the top of the fifth inning, Jimmy Rollins scored one run to raise the Phillies’ lead when Placido Polanco singled off right-field. On the other side, the Giants also added one run at the bottom of the fifth inning to shorten their lead 5-2. Whiteside
struck a one-run homer (402 feet) to left-field.
During the sixth inning, the Phillies increased their lead 8-2 by exploding three runs. Ibanez posted a single run on the drive of Brian Schneider towards right-field. The second and third runs were taken by Mayberry Jr. and Schneider when Rollins hit a
single-run shot to right-field. Hunter Pence hit a one-run homer (439 feet) towards left-field to give the Phillies a convincing 9-2 lead, at the top of the seventh inning.
The last two innings were under the control of the pitchers as they threw score-less pitches. As a result, the Phillies took a 2-0 lead against the Giants in the four-game series.
