John McEnroe believes that Novak Djokovic is unlikely to win four slams in a row – Tennis News
Legendary tennis icon, John McEnroe, believes that World number one, Novak Djokovic, should not feel a lot of pressure before starting his fourth successive Grand Slam title campaign in the Roland Garros French Open. He is inching
towards a landmark but undue pressure at the start will just let down his overall tempo and game play.
Last year, Roger Federer ended the 43-match winning streak of the number one Serb in the semi-finals of the French Open but this year he looks to round off all four Slam titles in succession and become the first player to register
that milestone ever since the king of tennis, Rod Laver, did that in 1969.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion, McEnroe stated, “Djokovic has got to be careful, he felt that [pressure] at the French last year and he’s going to feel it again this time. It’s going to be his fourth in a row and obviously no player
out there wants to let another guy win four in a row.”
He further added, “Everyone’s always trying to amp something up, everyone looks back more at the records, I mean people are looking at what Roy Emerson’s Grand Slam record was. They come up with these stats like someone’s just
sitting in a room coming up with these things.”
McEnroe stated that if the player is unable to stay calm and focused to his task; other people around him will just enhance the tension and drag to player to frenzy. Apart from just handling the pressure of big four titles in a
row, the major problem is that clay court is not the strength of Djokovic. King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, will not give him an easy route to the championship title and try to place all sorts of hurdles in his way. More importantly, the third ranked Spaniard is
the hot favourite to retain his title and the Serb will have to crush down the hype and stand up to the fierce competition from the Spaniard.
If the number one Serb is able to survive the trap of Nadal, he will still have to go through the two hungry big guns, Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Federer has stepped up to the number two spot recently after winning the Mutua
Madrid Open and he is aiming to reclaim his throne whereas the British number one is eyeing his maiden Grand Slam title. So, the competition is intense and pressure is huge, conditions are not favourable for the Serb at all but miracles happen.
