John McEnroe wins fifth title at Royal Albert Hall – Tennis News
Pat Cash was ousted by the stylish McEnroe in the final of the AEGON Masters tennis tournament at Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday 4th December. He won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and was crowned champion
for the fifth time.
Final was much more exciting considering the fact that McEnroe lost to Cash in the round-robin clash so it was a perfect chance for him take his revenge at the elitist stages of the tournament and he didn’t blinked an eye, cruised
past his opponent and registered an emphatic win to cover his earlier narrow loss.
Opening set was exciting as McEnroe broke his opponent’s serve in the third and fifth set to take the set and followed it up with two more breaks in the second set to take the match in grand fashion. Cash did changed his rackets
after the first set in the hunt to have a better luck in the next set but nothing could stop the veteran from clinching yet another Legends title.
Seven times Grand Slam champion that included three Wimbledon titles in his professional career was humble enough to state that he never dreamt of winning yet another title at this surface at such veteran age. He said “I never
thought I'd win another title here. The people here have been fantastic to me. It's a great place to play tennis and maybe I and Pat can have a rematch here next year. It means a lot that people still want to watch me play and to win here again is unbelievable."
Cash was slightly on the slower side in the final having aced all three matches in the round-robin contest. His footwork was lethargic and he never seemed to have settled into the scenario. In a post-match presentation ceremony,
Cash stated, “I felt a bit doubtful before the match but I'm glad I made it out here today and played. My timing was off a fraction and it felt like I hadn't put my contacts lenses in today.”
This tournament was played along with Champions tournament to encompass a lot more players in order to provide more entertainment to the audience with greater number of matches. The final of the Champions tournament was conquered
by Tim Henman. He defeated the Thomas Enqvist in straight sets but not before the second set went to a tight tie-breaker. It was his first Champions title and that rounded off the veteran show for this season at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
