John Millman capsizes Greg Jones to progress into round two – Brunei International 2012 CH
In an all-Aussie contest, wildcard entrant John Millman outplayed the fifth seed, Greg Jones, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to book a berth in the second round of the Brunei Challenger tournament. On Tuesday, both players went
face-to-face on hard courts in Australia. The wildcard entrant registered a win in just over an hour and 8 minutes.
A sizeable crowd was present at the arena to witness the two local contestants battling it out for the sixth time in their careers. Surprisingly the inferior ranked Aussie, Millman, leads the head-to-head tally with 4-2 after
this conquest and Jones will regret this loss that would have levelled the head-to-head scores if he had won this battle.
It was a pretty sloppy start to the match with both players reluctant to take any kind of risks in order to manoeuvre the proceedings at their will. Opening six games went by and none of the contestants registered any breakthroughs
yet. It was the underdog, Millman, who decided to give it a shot and started advancing towards the net after every return.
Fortunately for him, Jones was pushed on the back foot and couldn’t find a way out to counter this onslaught. Millman broke serve and successful took the lead that was good enough to register him the first set triumph. Jones
was close on recovering the lost breakpoint in the ninth game but couldn’t convert two breakpoint opportunities to his favour and eventually lost the first set.
Both players held their serves in the first two game of the second set as the scores moved to 1-1. Millman had seen a laid back approach of his opponent and capitalized it with an all round onslaught; broke serve twice in
succession and took 5-1 lead by the end of the sixth game. Jones had already surrendered by that time and it was just a matter of few more minutes before Millman could confirm his spot in the next round.
Millman made no mistake in the remaining two games and successfully cruised into the next round of the contest with an upset under his belt.
