John Mitchell announces Golden Lions match day squad for semi-final encounter against Western Province
South African provincial Rugby Union side, Golden Lions, has announced their roster for the upcoming 2011 ABSA Currie Cup’s semi-final against Western Province. Golden Lions head coach, John
Mitchell, listed his squad on Wednesday, October 19. Lions will host the Western Province at Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg on Saturday, October 22.
Golden Lions finished as the leaders of the 2011 Currie Cup table. However, the defending champions, Natal Sharks, hammered them in their last pool match of the tournament. Sharks handed over
a thumping 44 point deficit defeat but even a bonus point win, did not help the Sharks to finish at the top position of the table.
Lions secured 50 points from their 14 round matches of the South African provincial competition, which includes 10 wins.
Mitchell has made overall changes in the Lions squad, as compare to the one, which took the field against the Sharks during the last weekend. Lions are strengthened with the return of several
of their first choice players who were on national duty for Springboks in the ongoing 2011 Rugby World Cup tournament.
This includes the likes of the front row forwards player, CJ van der Linde and fly half Butch James. Van der Linde will start the match from the prop position, while James will start the match
from the bench, Lions will with Elton Jantjies at the crucial fly half position.
Additionally, Mitchell has moved Lions captain Joshua Strauss from flanker to the number eight position for the Saturday’s match.
Jaco Peyper is named as the match referee for the first of the two semifinals of the 2011 Currie Cup.
