John Mooney devastated to miss out World T20 – Cricket News Update
Ireland all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Francis-Mooney-c67825 has said that missing out on next month’s World T20 Championship was devastating, as a fractured finger sidelines him for a minimum of twelve weeks.
"I'm devastated to be missing out on the rest of the season and the Twenty20 World Cup", Mooney told ESPNcricinfo on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Dublin-born all-rounder sustained the fractured finger during an Irish club cricket match, while attempting a catch low to the ground, off Eddie Richardson.
"I was playing as a bowler for my club North County at the weekend...I took a sharp chance low to the ground at first slip off Eddie http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richardson-c85395 and looked down to see the top part of my middle finger … I knew it wasn't good," Mooney
explained.
Initially it was hoped that the left-handed batsman, who also bowls right-arm medium pace, will be back playing by September. But the finger specialist confirmed that it was not only a fracture, rather the player has also ripped the
tendon from the bone and will take at least 12 weeks to return to full fitness. On the course he will miss the remainder of the domestic season, as well as next month’s T20 extravaganza in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
“I'm in a splint now for 12 weeks where hopefully the tendon will reconnect with the bone,” said the swashbuckling Dubliner, who has won 134 Irish caps. “It's particularly hard to take as I had to fly home from the qualifiers early
due to my hamstring injury,” he added further.
Cricket Ireland performance director Richard http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Holdsworth-c63286 also expressed disappointment over Mooney’s untimely injury and said that they will miss him during the T20 World Cup next month.
Mooney made his international debut in June 2006, against England, at Belfast, and has to date played 45 One Day Internationals and 21 T20 Internationals. He has been a key member of the Irish squad since the 2007 cricket world cup.
Last year he struck the winning runs for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in a World Cup match, in the subcontinent.
Ireland have been drafted in Group B, alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, and will open up their World T20 campaign against mighty Aussies at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on September 19.
Cricket Ireland is expected to release its final 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup at 9am local time on Friday, August 17.
