John Parry: Race to Dubai’s golfer of the Month
The English golfer John Parry won the European Tour Race to Dubai Golfer of the month award for September after his amazing victory in France. Parry won the Vivendi Cup title in Paris by two shots from the Swedish Johan Edfors.
This was John’s first European title. John who is from Harrogate in Yorkshire now became the fourth Challenge Tour graduate from the class of 2009 to win on the 2010 Race to Dubai.
On being the golfer of the month, John will receive magnum of Moet and Chandon champagne and an engraved alms dish. Parry started the tournament in 116th position in the Race to the Dubai, but was hoisted up to number 66 due to his amazing win
in Paris.
After that, a fantastic third place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland lifted him up to the 40th position. Not only is John in the top 60, he will also have a significant starting role in the end of the season Dubai Championship.
John Parry turned professional at the end of 2007. During his amateur career, he has won many tournaments including the Spanish and Danish Amateur Championships. He also represented Ireland and Great Britain in the Walker Cup.
In 2009, John won the 2009 Allianz Golf Open Toulouse on the Challenge tour. That season, John finished in the 14th place on the Challenge Tour rankings and hence earned his playing rights for the European Tour for 2010. Playing in the European
Tour for the first time, Parry won the inaugural Vivendi Cup. This earned him not only the €204,000 but also a year’s exemption.
John will become the fourth member of the talented 2007 GB&I Walker cup side to win on the European Tour. Parry is hence following the footsteps of great golf champions like Rory McIlroy, David Horsey, and Rhys Davies. John Parry was in close competition
with Miguel Angel Jimenez for the player of the month Award.
Therefore, Parry did win by a narrow margin since Jimenez had won the Omega Masters. Along with Miguel, Martin Kaymer of Germany was also a strong contender. Kaymer was in the limelight due to his amazing triumphs in the US PGA Championship, KLM Open and
the Links Championship just recently. Also in the race to be names best of the month was the Spanish Jose Manuel Lara who was victorious at the Austrian Golf Open presented by Botarin.
The Vivendi Cup win, that John calls ‘career changing’, has a lot to do with Parry winning this award. He said: "The difference between my last two visits to France was incredible. At the French Open in July I was on the range as first reserve and got a
call on Thursday morning to say I was on the tee in 15 minutes! The next time I returned to Paris I won the tournament, so I don't have to worry about being a reserve again.
John said that his goal for the Vivendi Cup was to merely be in the top ten, but winning it has now given John the ability to dream higher. It had given him confidence and he thought he could win the Links Championship. Even though, things in Scotland didn’t
really work out how he planned, they still boosted his confidence to a great extent. Now going into the Portugal Masters as a player of the month, Parry should definitely feel really good about his game. In the first round, John finished in the 40th
position at 3-under 69. The second round is in progress today at the Victoria Course at Vilamoura in Portugal.
Overall, John Parry is one of the ‘hot’ golfers at the moment with a title, an amazing finish and an award linked to his name. Hopefully all this good news will lead to better results from Parry before the season ends.
