John Parry leads Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open on day one – Golf news
John Parry fired an eight-under par 64 in the opening round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open to take a one-stroke lead over Simon Khan, on Thursday, July 11, 2013.
The tournament is being staged at the Castle Stuart Golf Links, featuring some of the best European Tour players from different parts of the world.
Parry, who secured his European Tour card by winning the Qualifying School event at the end of the 2012 season, started his campaign with straight two birdies, followed by a couple of par putts.
He then gained shots on the fifth and the sixth hole, before finishing the front nine of the course with another birdie putt on the ninth hole.
Entering the back nine of the course, he was five under for the round. Thereafter, he kept the momentum going and drained birdie putts on the 14th, 16th and the 18th hole, to finish the day without conceding a single bogey.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in finally returning to his form and playing well for the last few weeks - he missed the cut in seven of the first 10 starts that he made earlier this season, before qualifying for
the US Open and recording a top-10 finish in Germany.
“I've been playing better. I think the US Open was the catalyst for me to start playing better, making cuts,” he said. “It's renowned for being the toughest event of the year; you know if you can compete on that, you know you can compete on any course. It's
good for your confidence.”
“I think my wedge play and iron play were key. That's what I knew coming into this event to work on, because off the tee, it's quite generous, so you can work on your short irons and wedges and you can take lots of chances,” he added.
He now plans to remain consistent in the remaining three rounds, in a bid to secure the second European Tour title victory of his career. His maiden victory on the tour came at the Vivendi Cup in 2010.
