John Pink happy with performance despite overturned boat: 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 5
Great Britain’s John Pink had a troublesome Day 3 at the 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 5, as his Extreme 40 boat, Aberdeen Asset Management, capsized due to heavy gusts during the race. But Pink and his crew gained control of the boat to cross the finish line successfully. Pink is happy the way his team performed during the situation and hopes to sail with new enthusiasm on the fourth day.
The winds were quite strong much like Day 2, as they blew around 20 to 25 knots over the racing area with heavy gusts. The British Extreme 40 capsized during the race when Aberdeen Asset Management was sandwiched between Niceforyou and Red Bull Extreme Sailing and a big gust hit the boats.
However, Aberdeen Asset Management’s experienced crew consisting of John Pink, John Gimson, Gregory Homann and Rick Peacock managed to control the boat and sailed it towards the finish line. Aberdeen Asset Management finished at number 10 overall at the end of Day 3 at Cowes.
While Speaking to the local media at the end of races, Pink said, “We felt we were in control mainly and kept going a bit quicker today than we had on the other days. Coming down that run it just all got very close and the breeze kind of seemed to fill in behind so everyone bunched up a little bit and then we had nowhere to go!”
He added, “We were very happy, it was coming together and hopefully we can put the boat back together for tomorrow hopefully. We will work on it pretty hard tonight, sort everything out so it is back in shape and we'll be back in the water tomorrow with a bit of luck.”
