John Pink’s Aberdeen Asset Management capsized due to heavy gusts: 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 5
Great Britain’s Extreme Sailing team, Aberdeen Asset Management skippered by John Pink, overturned during their sail on Day 3 of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 due to strong winds blowing across the race site. However, Pink and crew members Rick Peacock,
Greg Homann and John Gimson gained control over the boat and finished the race.
The British Extreme 40 boat was being helmed by Pink, as they set sail charging downwind with a reefed mainsail for third day of the competition. During the race, they got sandwiched between Niceforyou from Italy and Red Bull Extreme Sailing of Austria.
A big gust of heavy wind hitched all three boats and they flipped vertically as there was not much room among them to maneuver. Pink and crew members were safe in this incident and they finally gained control over the boat to end the race convincingly.
Strong winds also created problems for the Extreme Sailing teams on Day 2, as Artemis Racing and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild collided with each other and received severe damage. As a result of this crash, Artemis Racing couldn’t compete further in the competition
and pulled out of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 on Day 3.
