John Sadler talks about Holy Candy and Zazu
The 3-year-old John W. Sadler trained colt, Holy Candy, started his quest to break his maiden last year in November, but was a whisker away from doing it at first attempt, but it wasn’t the last time he was going to get that close of breaking it, because
he was that close is every attempt ever since. Turning in three consecutive 2nd place finishes at maiden special weights, Holy Candy finally stuck his head out in his 4th attempt to break it at a mile at Santa Anita Park on 23 March,
2012.
Craig Family Trust owned, Holy Candy, won the mile long race in 1 minute and 35.98 seconds, defeating Eaton Hall in second and Seal the Deal in third.
It was a three and a half length win over Eaton Hall, after Holy Candy was sent as the 1 to 2 favourite. It was an impressive win that made John Sadler thinking about other options for the colt, and he could be pointing the colt to the Grade 1, $750,000
Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park next month, but Sadler didn’t say that it is the final decision
“He’s just a young horse with three races (before yesterday’s maiden win) who was very impressive yesterday,” Sadler said. “Nothing is set in stone but we’re looking at everything.”
On the other hand Ann Moss and Jerome Moss owned Zazu, who is also trained by Sadler, has never let her connections down, because the 4-year-old filly has been all so consistent throughout her career, and it’s seldom that Zazu finishes less than second.
The 4-year-old daughter of Tapit, out of mare Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley, has finished 2nd 5 times in her career and four time first, while she finished third once and only once an off the board position was acquired by the filly when she finished
fifth in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet in 2010.
Zazu is ready for her 2012 debut, as she breezed three furlongs in 35.40 seconds.
“It was her first three-eighths work and we’re really excited,” Sadler said. “Hopefully next time you’re writing about her will be before the Breeders’ Cup here in November.”
