Does he realise that these unusual clouds were being sprayed from the rear of high flying aircraft which means that these clouds are artificial. They are known as chemtrails and are toxic over populated areas. These are NOT contrails which disappear after a few minutes. These trails hung around for hours and spread out all over the sky.

It seems John has been misinformed by the Bureau of Meteorology. Can he make a correction?.

  1. The cloud that he was referring to was called Cirrus clouds. They are not unusual though. Cirrus clouds exist at high levels and are made out of ice.  In this case, the cloud formed at 35,000 feet. The cirrus cloud formed from the outer edge of an upper level jet stream (not an aircraft).

  2. Contrails to sometimes last for hours, depending on the humidity of the air. If they disappear quickly, the air is very dry. If they last for a long time, and spread over large parts of the sky, the air is humid, and could indicate a change to wetter weather.

Contrails are made of ice crystals.

So, I think the Bureau of Meteorology was right.
