John Terry: Chelsea will “fight and scrap”
Chelsea captain John Terry spoke out on the recent ongoing debate on some club’s tough tackling as the controversy about defenders and tactics in defending continue. Terry, who is considered a somewhat tough tackling defender, insisted
that the teams had every right to go in with sturdy tackles as long as they were not illegitimate.
Danny Murphy, the Fulham midfielder and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger were the ones who brought the issue to light, they suggested some sides used extreme physical force to make up for lack of football skills. But John Terry came to their
rescue when he said that they had every right to do so.
This weekend the Blues travel to Blackburn, a side which will be eager to get back to winning ways after a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend. Blackburn, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City have come under severe criticism
for their physical play in recent games.
However, the Blues captain feels that the criticism is unjustified. He believes that if sides like Wolves, Stoke and Blackburn feel that they can earn points by being physical, then they have every right to play tough, physical football.
Terry said that his side would be prepared for the tricky fixture and would “fight and scrap” for a win.
Terry told reporters in an interview, “What has been said about teams like Blackburn, Wolves and Stoke is very unfair. We can't expect to go to Ewood Park and pick up three points just because we're Chelsea Football Club. First and foremost
we've got to go there and have a fight with them. We have to be prepared for a scrap.”
Chelsea have had an excellent start to the season, picking up from where they had left off in the last. The Blues won their first ever double under Carlo Ancelotti last season and are looking to repeat the success this season, but their
good form has said to be a result of an easy fixture list.
However, the Blues faced Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa over the past few weeks and despite a loss, win and draw respectively, are still top of the league. This just proves one thing, the fixture list has not been too favourable
for the Blues recently and any other side would have stumbled but the Blues are still going strong.
A few more games against even tougher opponents, like Liverpool and Manchester United and their critics like Sir Alex Ferguson will not be able to blame the fixture list as an excuse. The Blues have duplicated their good form in the Champions
League as well, they currently sit top of their group.
