John Toshack keen to stay in football management
Former Wales national team coach John Toshack said today that he is keen to remain in football management.
The 61-year-old left the job by mutual consent with the Football Association of Wales yesterday. Toshack had struggled to achieve success with the national side and failed to win qualification to the finals of a major tournament —meaning Wales have now spent 52 years in the international wilderness.
Though the former Real Madrid manager received praise for the way that he blooded several youngsters into the senior set-up during his six-year tenure, he received criticism for the way he dealt with older players among the squad with the likes of Ryan Giggs, John Hartson and Robbie Savage having stopped playing for Wales during Toshack’s reign.
However, the bad experience of having not succeeded with the Wales side has not put Toshack off football management altogether, and is keen to find another job.
'Few things to sort out'
He told reporters today that: "I don't see anything happening in the immediate future — there are still a few things to be sorted out — but, if the past is anything to go on, in the new year I may be somewhere else. This is not a new position — I have had highs and lows before."
Toshack left the job in the wake of Wales’s UEFA 2012 European Championship qualifying defeat at the hands of Montenegro, but wished his as-yet-unconfirmed successor all the best in their new role.
He added that Wales still had a chance of qualifying for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine. He said that: "The group is far from settled. I would like to see the players go out and perform like they have never performed before and the crowd get behind them. I hope whoever comes in gets off to a good start. I still feel the team is capable of getting positive results."
