John Watson thinks Jenson Button must come to terms with Sergio Perez – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, John Watson has insisted that McLaren driver, Jenson Button must come to terms with his team, Sergio Perez by himself after their harsh incident in the 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix.
Perez tried to overtake Button twice at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. At first, he touched the right rear tyre of the Briton at a corner. Just after few laps, he again tried to gain position over the 2009 world champion during which their
tyres connected with each other.
The 33-year-old seemed very annoyed with the aggressive driving of the Mexican driver and asserted that he has not come across such a dirty fight with any of his teammates in the past. Moreover, he said that the young driver must act more matured on track.
On the other hand, although the 23-year-old has agreed that he was very ferocious on track during the last race. But, he claimed that his teammate was also very belligerent to gain position.
Watson has said that aggressiveness is a part of the game. So, if Perez is giving Button tough time on track, the British driver cannot ask his team principal, Martin Whitmarsh to advice the youngster.
“If Perez gives Button a difficult time, it's up to Button to come to terms with it,” Watson told BBC Sport. “It's a fact of life. He can't expect Martin Whitmarsh to tell Perez to back off.”
“If your kid team-mate is pushing you hard, it's not nice, but it's part of the game. You have to respond by getting in and doing the best job,” he said.
Besides, he said that the Mexican is very much keen to make his position stronger in his new team for which he is trying his best.
“Someone like Perez is fast, fiery and keen to lay down his own scent trail, like animals in the jungle, to establish a pecking order in team,” he added.
Additionally, he stated that even though the Woking based squad say that they don’t give any of their drivers preferential treatment, but Button holds the position of number one driver because of his experience and Perez will do anything to gain that repute.
