John Weisbrod takes position as Assistant General Manager of Calgary Flames –NHL offseason Update
Calgary Flames inducted a top level official in its management on Monday, announced the hiring of John Weisbrod as Flames' new general manager and player personnel to Flames, GM Jay Feaster, a post which had been vacant for quite a while now.
Weisbrod spent his previous career most recently with the Stanley Cup winning Boston Bruins as the Director of Pro and Collegiate Scouting for Bruins and has been known for his ability to search out talent from even the most remote of places.
“We are pleased to be able to add someone with John’s experience to our staff”, Calgary GM Jay Feaster said. “Not only does he come with an extensive background in various disciplines of hockey, John has won championships as General Manager in both the AHL
and IHL and most recently in his current position, leading the pro and collegiate scouting staff of the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. John has the current experience and knowledge that I need from the person in this position”.
The 43-year-old had spent most of his time with Bruins, who he had joined in September of 2006.
Prior to that, he was a pro scout for Dallas Stars, vthe New England region.
Overall, Weisbrod has been in the hockey management business since the early 90’s in which he started his career in the American Hockey League (AHL) as the General Manager/Director of Operations for the Albany River Rats, New Jersey Devils' affiliate.
At one point, Weisbrod also joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as their General Manager and Chief Operating Officer for the Orlando Magic franchise but returned to hockey in 2005.
The American native from Syosset, New York, was drafted in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by the then Minnesota North Stars as the 73rd overall pick but only played a single season (1991-1992) and retired due to injury which disallowed him from continuing.
Calgary hopes to make it big in the upcoming season, since they were not able to enter the playoffs for two straight seasons now. Having experience people like Weisbrod on board is one step towards that.
