John Wright, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 cricket coach, supports New Zealand Cricket’s decision to appoint Ross Taylor as new Kiwi skipper but also weighs justly the professional skills and capabilities of Brendon McCullum, who was also a candidate for captaincy.
The NZC has recently handed over the reins of all three formats of the game to Taylor after Denial Vettori’s resignation from the captaincy in the backdrop of the Black Caps’ lackluster http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup campaign.
McCullum and Taylor were two potential candidates for captaincy and the selectors had to take a lot of time to decide between the two.
Taylor finally emerged as more favourable option as he had led the side in the World Cup during Vettori’s injury-forced exit.
Moreover, Taylor’s marvellous and match-winning 131 runs off 124 balls against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in a group stage game of the World Cup perked up his chances.
Commenting on http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915’s new role, Wright said, “I've been impressed by his captaincy when he had the opportunity. I think we'll complement each other well.”
He further told, “By the same token Brendon, it's very disappointing for him because he's got his strengths as well. None of these things are completely cut and dried.”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wright-c98127 regarded Brendon as a valuable asset of New Zealand’s leadership group and nullified the perception that he is inferior to Taylor in terms of averages and records.
Brendon, despite being http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gordon-Muchall-c1499 disappointed, has accepted Taylor as captain and is ready to work with him.
The NZC is likely to offer vice-captaincy to Brendon. Wright also urged Taylor and Brendon to work as captain and vice-captain respectively for the betterment of the Kiwi cricket.
Citing an example of his Indian experience, Wright told, “Sourav Ganguly and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Dravid-c2229, they were captain and vice-captain and they helped each other and were both very important to the side.”
The 27-year-old Taylor is a brilliant and brash middle-order batsman. He has played 30 Tests, 107 ODIs and 37 T20s so far with batting averages of 41.12, 36.80 and 21.96 respectively in all three formats.
In his post-captaincy interview with a TV channel, he has revealed that he wants to change the culture of the Kiwi cricket.
