What is most impressive about Abigail Adams's intervention on her husband's behalf in his quarrel with Thomas Jefferson? Is it possible to compare the political partnership of John and Abigail Adams with, for example, that of Hillary and Bill Clinton?

  1. Yes, both couples support each other.

  2. First of all, theirs was truly a love match. they loved, and more, respected one another. LOL..in letters written during their "courtship" or engagement as we call it now, John began his letters "Miss Adorable"...in a letter from 1763 he calls her "Diana"; alluding to the goddess Diana, an emblem of chastity, strength, athletic grace, distinct beauty and hunting skill; and goes on to say "Love sweetens Life, and Life sometimes destroys Love. Beauty is desirable and Deformity detestible; Therefore Beauty is not Deformity nor Deformity, Beauty. Hope springs eternal in the human Breast, I hope to be happyer next Fall than I am at present, and this Hope makes me happyer now than I should be without it."

This type of passionate, respectful relationship lasted throughout their lives. In a letter to John, Abigail begins by calling him "My Dearest Friend"...she always informed John of not only the doing of the government, but the feelings and attitudes of the Senators/Congressmen and the plots, feuds, jealousies, etc that surrounded the government.

Abigail truly and wholeheartedly believed in her husband, in her role as his wife and in their marriage.

I'd hesitate to compare it with the Clinton partnership. Abigail had no political pretensions. While Hilary appears to have always supported and defended Bill, that was truly more political expediency than it was the love and respect of two people for one another.
