Johnnie Walker Championship: road to the Ryder Cup
The time is almost here for one of the most prestigious golfing events of the year, the Johnnie Walker Championship. The stage for this event is the Gleneagles Hotel.
This will also be the venue for the next Ryder Cup, which is going to take place in the year 2014. The course has hosted many high profile events before as well.
The Championship tees off on the 23rd of August and after three days of marvelous golf, it ends on the 26th of August. Last year, the event was bagged by Thomas Bjorn. This year he would be looking to bag it again.
All the fans will be totally focused on this event as this is going to be the last counting event for this year’s Ryder cup. The venue for this event is the Medinah Golf Course and will tee off on the 28th of September. This is going to be a very
fantastic battle between Europe and America.
The captain for this year’s European team is Jose Maria Olazabal and the captain of the American team is Davis Love III.
One player who everyone is surprised to see in the Ryder Cup is David Lynn. Lynn’s fantastic performance in his first major Championship in USA lifted the 38-year-old from the 28th to the 13th position.
“Jumping 15 places in The Ryder Cup standings was just fantastic,” said Lynn. “Last year I missed the cut at the Johnnie Walker Championship but I’m feeling much more positive this year”.
“If I can play like I did last weekend, who knows what will happen, I suppose if I did win at Gleneagles and was 11th or something on the rankings I would have a chance of a wild card. I'm just glad to be part of the conversation, to be honest,” he added.
Championship Director, Graeme Marchbank of Diageo, said “The Ryder Cup race has gone right down to the wire and it will be fascinating to see who has it in their locker to put in a good performance at Gleneagles”.
The teams are not final, the European captain still has to make two wild card entries in the team. This is a very important decision and it is completely up to the captain.
