Johnny Cueto shines as Cincinnati Reds defeat Colorado Rockies 2-1 – MLB Update
Johnny Cueto pitched seven strong innings on Thursday, August 11 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat Colorado Rockies 2-1 at Great American Ball Park.
It was yet another great performance of the Reds’ starter to win his team a glorious victory.
Even his opponent was all praise for him "(Cueto's) very good," Chacin said. "When you face him, you know it's going to be a close game. What's more frustrating is getting the first two outs and then allowing four hits and two runs."
The team manager was all praise for him. "Johnny was dealing," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said. "He had an easy inning going but he made a mistake to their pitcher, that put him in trouble."
For Cueto himself, who has lately become the Reds’ ace, it required some extra force this time to overpower the opponents.
Of the last 10 games that Cueto has played, he has been responsible for winning six with 18 games in the season so far. In his 18 games, he has won eight pitching 120.1 innings, maintaining 1.94 to prove his productivity for the Cincinnati Reds.
This was the second win for the Reds in as many games as they were initially beaten in the earlier two encounters of the four-game series. Winning the last one 3-2, the Reds seemed to be determined to make a stronger start on Thursday.
Johnny Cueto did it with a strong inning that he pitched, not allowing any hit or run to the Colorado Rockies’ hitters.
When Jhoulys Chacin came for pitching on the mound, the Cincinnati Reds’ offence came into action, taking an early 2-0 lead. Jay Bruce was first to score followed by Drew Stubbs single that came in the aftermath of an error by third baseman Nelson.
The lead that the Cincinnati Reds acquired in the very first inning was supposed to be maintained by Johnny Cueto. The starter was pretty successful in discharging this heavy responsibility. Inning after inning he pitched solidly to maintain a 2-0 lead.
Pitching the seventh and not allowing any run, Cueto was then replaced by Aroldis Chapman who pitched a shutout eighth while Chacin kept pitching after he gave up two runs in the very first inning. Chacin pitched the eighth, as Francisco Cordero came as
a closer for the Rockies.
Seth Smith homered to bring down the lead 2-1 in the last inning, something that could prove to be disastrous. However, Cordero maintained his poise and set other hitters packing, wrapping up the game with a 2-1 victory for the Cincinnati Reds. Both teams
fought hard throughout the game, but in the end it was the Reds that dominated and took an impressive victory over the Rockies.
