Johnny Cueto’s omission from All-Star Game surprises the starter – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' starter Johnny Cueto on Sunday, July 1, expressed his ignorance about the actual reason of omitting his name from the All-Star Game. The announcement made regarding the names of the players generated surprise and – paradoxically, much disbelief as well.
Johnny Cueto was one of the eminent names missing from the list that the baseball fans waited to see with bated breath. While all the fans, including the team management remained in a state of shock when it came to Cueto’s omission, Cueto failed to figure out the reason behind the decision.
"I don't know if they based their selection on what happened in 2010 and that brawl," Cueto said through an interpreter. "But I don't think that's the way it should be. That's not fair if that's the way they pick and choose players. You should pick and choose players based on their performance and numbers on the field.”
Cueto, a quick look at his record shows, has by far remained one of the best starters in the National League this season. If nothing else, his nine wins in his 16 starts manifest the enviable talent and power this pitcher has.
The 2.26 ERA is one of the best in NL, along with 79 strike-outs in just over 107 innings so far as he merely allowed 98 hits. He stands second in his quality starts and ERA in the National League as the season progresses.
Cueto said, "I see that I have great numbers. Really to be honest, I thought with the way I was pitching this year I would have a chance to go to the All-Star Game. I don't know what happened, really."
The All-Star Game is to be played next Tuesday, July 10. While the likes of Jay Bruce, Joy Votto and Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds have successfully made their names in the list, the concern on Cueto’s omission will stay there for a long time.
Nevertheless, in the time to come, Cueto’s great performance in the Division as well as the League will only leave feelings of disappointment and sadness for his omission from All-Star Game.
