Johnny Damon comments on Derek Jeter’s possible 3,000 hits campaign this season – MLB Update
Derek Jeter has a target on his mind and there is no way that he feels any more pressure than he does at the moment. The captain of the New York Yankees is 74 hits shy of a 3,000 mark. His former team-mate Johnny Damon commented on Jeter’s possible 3,000
hits campaign during the upcoming 2011 Major League Baseball season.
Interestingly, he is not the only player on the prowl. Former team-mate, Johnny Damon is also in the chase, but his campaign may have to wait for another year till he can get to that pivotal point. Damon, who was recently acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays,
was more than willing to comment on Jeter. He talked about the situation that lets players lose the motivation to move for the 3000 hits tally.
"They pay us so much money nowadays, a lot of guys probably start losing interest around the 2,000 mark," Damon said. "For him to be the only Yankee to ever do it, that goes to show you how well he dealt with New York and how well he managed his career.
Playing 17 years in New York is like playing 25 somewhere else, probably. That's an amazing feat and I could see at the end of these three years, he could be at 3,500 and on his way to Cooperstown."
Jeter is looking good these days and his spring training sprint has gone well. The ball star recently signed a two year deal with the Yankees and he will be aiming to improve on his form from 2010. Damon on the other hand, is looking to assist the Rays in
retaining their American League East title. With 2,276 games in the clear, the veteran has 2,571 hits to his name. He is 429 hits away from a 3,000 figure himself.
In a recent game against the Houston Astros in the Grapefruit League, he availed four walks from the opposition. The left-fielder will be an important asset for the club when the 2011 Major League Baseball campaign kicks off.
