Johnny Damon looks on as Tampa Bay Rays crash out of American League Division Series
Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter was willing to talk to the press on Tuesday, October 4 when his club lost their recent game against the Texas Rangers at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
The hitter was involved in the match but he could not do much against a strong Texas pitching staff. The slugger had a few words to share after the game ended in a 4-3 defeat for the home team.
"Unfortunately history only remembers the champions at the end," Johnny Damon said. "But I do think that the month of September really won a bunch of hearts of the fans in the St. Pete, Tampa, Orlando area. I'm sure it was fun for people to watch."
Damon was a prominent member of the hitting line-up that lifted the Rays from the depths of the American League Ranking table to clinch the American League Wild Card berth on the very last day of the regular season.
The experienced slugger faced 78 at-bats in the month of September. He added 12 runs, 19 hits, two home-runs and 12 RBIs to his season tally for that month. His batting average was weak on .244 but he proved himself as an incredible asset in the last seven
days.
The hard hitter notched up a batting average of .308 and he managed four hits off 13 at-bats. He steered home one home-run and three RBIs.
In his last game against the Texas Rangers in Game 4 of the American League Division Series, the player managed to squander all four of his at-bats for nothing. The player has now been in the regular leagues for the last 17 years and his recent stint with
the Rays pushed him to the end.
"It's always painful, especially being around the league for this long," said the designated hitter. "We had a good enough team to win, and keep on winning.”
With the season over, it will be interesting to see if the Rays keep Damon on the roster or not. He will most likely be a free-agent in the off-season.
