Johnny Herbert says Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen will be strong in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Former F1 driver and F1 expert, Johnny Herbert, has stated that McLaren’s Jenson Button and Lotus F1’s Kimi Raikkonen will be the drivers posing a strong threat to their rivals during the 2013 F1 season.
“McLaren and Jenson Button. [He's] leading the team and I think he's got a good situation to be able to possibly win that second world title,” Herbert told Sky Sports.
About Raikkonen, he said, “I think it was fantastic for him. The comeback has been absolutely brilliant. He's come back; he's very, very hungry for it. We saw the race win and, potentially, he could be a big threat next year.”
Button, who won the F1 championship in 2009, won three races this season. He won the first race of the season in Australia, the Belgian GP and then ended the season by winning the epic Brazilian GP. Since McLaren was dealing with continuous reliability issues,
both Button and now his former teammate, Lewis Hamilton, could only finish the season with fourth and fifth position in the drivers’ standings respectively despite having a good qualifying pace.
Since Hamilton is leaving to join the Mercedes team, it is obvious that Button will be becoming the lead driver in McLaren. He has stated that he is definitely very excited about being the driver who will be playing the lead role in improving the team and
having them develop the car around his needs.
On the other hand, Raikkonen made a return to F1 after being absent for two years. He has been under speculation for having lost interest in the sport due to which it is thought that he has not been securing victories. However, the Finnish driver was epic
in his race win at the Abu Dhabi GP. Raikkonen had a very consistent season as he completed all twenty races, finishing below the top ten only once. He finished third overall at the end of the season.
Herbert has driven for many teams during his F1 career that include Benetton and Sauber F1. He is a regular contributor for Sky Sports F1 and provides reliable analysis on the sport.
