Johnny Herbert thinks Mercedes will struggle in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Johnny Herbert has said that Mercedes will struggle in 2013 as they are far behind in the car development process as compared to their main rivals.
The Brackley based squad had a very successful pre-season testing programme in 2012 as compared to 2011 in which they could hardly test their car before the first race.
Furthermore, their driver, Nico Rosberg performed quite convincingly in the first few races during the last season and stood amongst one of the most consistent point scorers. In addition, he also scored his maiden victory in the Chinese Grand Prix which
was held at the Shanghai International Circuit in China after claiming his first ever pole position.
On the other hand, his teammate, Michael Schumacher managed to secure his first podium finish, in the European GP, after his return to the sport since 2010.
However, both the German drivers failed to score points with consistency because their team could not make the necessary development in their car during the season.
Even though, the team principal, Ross Brawn has said that they are making the essential preparations to come up stronger in this season. However, Herbert believes that the Silver Arrows will face difficulties in 2013 as they have not been able to develop
a competitive car as compared to the other top teams which include Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and McLaren.
Besides, he said that Lewis Hamilton, who has moved to Mercedes in this year, will surely face some difficulties in attaining good results.
“For sure it will be Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren at the front and it is good for me to see Jenson Button getting the chance to lead McLaren this season,” Herbert said. “It is a very good opportunity for him to be able to lead the team into a second World
Championship and there is potential for that to happen. On the other side, his team-mate from last year has left for Mercedes and Lewis is in a different situation.”
“Yes he can lead the team, that is all well and good, but we haven't seen a good Mercedes as yet,” he added.
