Johnny Miller believes Olympic Golf Course will be a hard nut to crack for the raging Rory McIlroy at US Open
While the whole world might be stalking the current world number one Rory McIlroy, NBC’s Johnny Miller has an altogether different opinion regarding the Northern Irishman’s chances of winning the second major title of the year the US Open.
The formidable former PGA Tour player, who has two major titles on his belt, believes that the Olympic Golf Club, the venue of this year’s US Open will be a hard nut to crack for the blistering trailblazer.
Miller opined that Congressional Country Club, the venue for the last year’s US Open, proved to be too easy for the young Ulsterman who landed the title with a wire-to-wire victory, leading the field by a whooping eight strokes.
Miller said, “Last year, Congressional was a good course, but it was almost like a Tour course. This is a whole different ballgame. They are back to more being at a U.S. Open. He won in a more non-traditional U.S. Open setup, in my opinion. Now, we are going
to get back to where, I believe, it’s not going to be so much fun and games out there”.
McIlroy, who had led the Masters in all the three rounds before falling for a disastrous 80 on Sunday, came out vengeful at the Congressional and won the coveted trophy. He was also the youngest player to win the title after Bobby Jones.
Currently ranked number one on the OWGR, McIlroy has performed well since the start of the season, snatching the world number one title from the Englishman Luke Donald on two occasions.
While Miller believes McIlroy has a slim chance of landing the title at the Olympic Golf Club, he also reckons that the young trailblazer still is a good bet and is likely to surge to the top in the coveted event.
He added, “Probably 3, 4, 5 under par will win the championship. So Rory basically won waltzing around like it was no big deal, and I just don’t see Olympic Club. Rory is a good pick, by the way”.
Top-60 players from the OWGR will be automatically selected to be part of the field at the event while the rest of the players will be selected through several other criterions.
