Johnson/Querrey trounce Klaasen/Shamasdin to reach semis – Farmers Classic 2012
Local wildcard entrants, Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey, eased past the South African-Canadian tandem, Raven Klaasen and Adil Shamasdin, in straight sets at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Friday. They clobbered a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against their opponents to
power into the final four at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event held in Los Angeles, California.
The American junction displayed brilliant co-ordination to knock out Klaasen and Shamasdin in their first encounter. After earning the glory in one hour and 22 minutes, the wildcard recipients convincingly booked a place in the semi-finals at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place from 23rd to 29th July.
Johnson and Querrey high-spiritedly entered the hard courts of Los Angeles Tennis Center. They swiped their serves until they drew the first blood in the eighth game and went 5-3 up. The American squandered their lead in the very next game but managed to
drag the set to a tie-breaker. They dominated in it and clicked the opener with a 7-6(5) success.
The local duo suffered the first blow in the fourth game of the following set and went 1-3 down. However, they made a fitting reply and jumped to a 4-3 lead with two breaks of serve. Regardless of losing their edge in the very next game, Johnson and Querrey
broke their rivals’ serve once again in the ninth game and got the upper hand. They plucked their serve in the last game and clicked the set by winning six games to four.
Overall, the American took full advantage of the seven double faults and several errors their rivals spilled. They clobbered a lower first serve share of 61 per cent as opposed to their rivals’ 65 per cent but tremendously marked 31 out of 42 points on it.
Next in line for Johnson and Querrey are the Belgian tandem of Ruben Bemelmans and Xavier Malisse. The Belgians stunned top seeds, Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and America’s Scott Lipsky, in straight sets to set up this clash.
The third seeded Britons, Jamie Delgado and Ken Skupski, will accompany the Americans in the final four. They received a walkover victory against the local tandem of Rajeev Ram and Michael Russell.
