Johnson Wagner and Branden Grace make huge jumps in world rankings - Golf News
Johnson Wagner has jumped from the 198th position to the 92nd in the Official World Golf Rankings, following his win in last week's Sony Open.
Wagner, who was outstanding in the tournament held at Hawaii, had enough time to practise for the new season.
While coming to South Africa, he told his friends that he wanted to record a win early in the season, which he did in no time.
"I was definitely telling people to expect something early this year, which is a nice feeling," Wagner said.
"Usually, my confidence is low. I'm kind of shy in a little shell. And for some reason, I just had way more energy and confidence going into this year," he continued.
It was his second appearance on the 2012 PGA Tour. In the season opening tournament at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, he clinched the ninth spot on the leaderboard, starting his 2012 season on a promising note.
With the victory in the Sony Open, he has now qualified for the Masters Tournament. Therefore, he will be displaying his skills in the first week of April at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, with an aim to win his first major.
On the other hand, the 2012 Joburg Open winner, Branden Grace, has also jumped from the 258th to the 164th
place in the Official World Golf Rankings.
It was a double treat for Grace to win his first title ever on the European Tour and improve his world’s ranking.
"This is a dream come true, it's nice to win in front of a home crowd and I wouldn't change it for anything else," Grace said after the win at Royal Johannesburg golf club.
Apart from the above changes in the rankings, there was no change among the top-10 names. However, there was a little shuffling between them.
Webb Simpson swapped his place with Adam Scott and moved to the sixth place, which is his career’s best.
Steve Stricker remained at the fifth spot, despite finishing with three straight bogeys at Waialae Country Club and standing tied at the 38th.
Two events will be played this week, namely, the Humana Challenge and the Volvo Golf Champions, where only two of the top 10 players will participate.
Dustin Johnson (8) will be featuring in the Humana Challenge and Charl Schwartzel (9) will be seen in action at the Volvo Golf Champions.
