Johnson Wagner awarded with PGA Avid Player, supports First Tee
Johnson Wagner was recently awarded with the PGA Tour Avid Player of the Month for January.
The 31-year-old golfer who won the Shell Houston Open in 2008 was awarded with a cash prize of $50,000, after he emerged as the winner of the competition.
The voting took place on the website pgatour.com. The golfer decided to split his money between The First Tee programs in Charlotte and Greater Houston.
Commenting on his gesture, CEO of Houston Golf Association, Steve Timms said, "We deeply appreciate Johnson's gesture".
With 52% of the votes landing in his favour the American golfer is all set and prepared to defend his title at Mayakoba Golf Classic.
It is worth mentioning here that Wagner ranks No. 3 on the PGA money list and No.2 when assessed on the basis of standards and regulatory framework outlined by FedEx Cup standings.
With such positive figures, he is being termed as a hot favourite for the event.
According to Wagner, the award that he received from his people and fans will definitely serve as a motivational tool in uplifting his performance.
Wagner, who won Sony Open held in Hawaii back in January, will be facing veteran golf player Greg Norman in his campaign opening match at Mayakoba.
Experts believe that it will be interesting to see the Ryder Cup’s captain Jose Maria Olazabal teeing it off together.
This year, the Spanish golfer took part in six golf events, with Volvo Championship held in South Africa being the most notable one in terms of performance.
Other than this, players such as Mike Weil and others will also be taking part in the event.
The participatory members of the event recently attended The First Tee of Greater Houston held at Redstone Golf Club.
During the entire session, all the players also witnessed the filming of Shell's
Driving Force. This will be aired at the launch of the event, Shell Houston Open.
Apart from the participants, the launching ceremony was also attended by long time members of the club, Arabella Cruz, who currently serves as a junior at Cypress Woods High School, and Lonnie Smith, an attendee in the event held in 2011.
