Johnson Wagner beats Spencer Levin in playoff to lift Mayakoba Golf Classic trophy
The $3.7-million Mayakoba Golf Classic concluded at the par-71 Greg Norman designed El Camaleon Course in Mexico with John Wagner of the United States emerging the winner.
Wagner, who also won the 2008 Houston Open, closed with a 4-under 67 to match Spencer Levin at 17-under 267 on the El Camaleon course after which they had to face each other in a playoff. Levin shot a 65 while Wagner cruised to victory over Levin on the first playoff hole, a par-4 18th where the runner-up Levin failed to make a par.
The victory at the 6,923-yard course in Playa del Carmen was the second success in Wagner’s career on the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour after the Houston Open in 2008. Wagner aimed to work harder for further successes. “I haven’t really had time to think about it, but I’m just beside myself excited,” Wagner said, “I’ve been working really hard, and it’s just nice to see stuff pay off when you work hard. It makes you want to work even harder.”
Levin looked futile in handling the pressure on the first playoff hole for his maiden victory at a PGA Tour. “Obviously, right this second I’m not very happy, but yeah, overall it was a good week, I’m happy about it. I hit a bad drive,” Levin said, “That’s pretty much it. It’s tough when you go in the trap. I hit a bad drive and a bad third shot.”
John Cook of the United States was the second with 14-under 270 with five-under par 71 on the final day. The leader of the second and third round, Chris Stroud, finished third after posting five-under 66 on the final day. His total aggregate was 13-under 271. The fourth spot was shared by six players at 12 under par 272 including Rory Sabbatini of South Africa, Jarrod Lyle of Australia and David Toms, Brian g*y, Briny Baird and Bobby Gates of USA. The Venezuelan sensation, Jhonattan Vegas managed a 10 way tie at the 19th spot. The winner of the last year, Cameron Beckman of the United States, finished at the 11th spot with 10-under 274. He posted an even par 71 on the final day.
Wagner received the trophy and winner’s cheque of $660,000. The next tournament at the PGA TOUR, The Honda Classic, will be played in Florida next week.
