Johnson Wagner prepares for a perfect defence at Mayakoba Golf Classic
He might have missed the World Golf Championships underway in Arizona, but for him it is defending his Mayakoba Golf Classic that is most important.
“I worked really hard this offseason to get ready for the beginning of the year,” Wagner said. “I’m really happy with the way I started and couldn’t be happier to be here at Mayakoba defending my championship”.
Wagner is positioned at the 72nd spot at present. After winning the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, he will now go for a bigger jump.
The second position that he was able to tie for at the Humana Challenge played a pivotal role in providing him with the much awaited breakthrough.
He also added that the presence of his family members played a significant role in motivating him and simultaneously improving his golf.
“I’m playing really good golf right now. I’m so happy to be back. My family is here. I’m having a great week already,” he stated.
He is currently preparing himself for his upcoming encounter against Greg Norman. It is important to mention here that Norman is among the pioneers and chief designers of the golf course.
According to Wagner, he is excited about the game, as he has never played with Norman before. However, both of them have met before.
Experts believe that Wagner must be fully prepared for the encounter since Greg, being the designer, is acquainted with all important dynamics and loopholes present in the course. He will be able to capitalise on this knowledge.
On the other hand, it is also being said that Norman, who has recently recovered from a surgery of his left shoulder, will definitely not be able to play as expected.
This will serve to provide advantage to Wagner. In addition to this, other players who will also be making their appearances in the event include Fred Funk, the winner of the inaugural event back in 2007.
He will be teeing it off with players and fellow champions such as John Cook, Tom Lehman, Nick Price and European Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal.
The line-up also accommodates Mike Weir, who, because of his right elbow surgery, was not able to participate in the Pebble Beach event.
