However, the Reds have also remained a victim of bad fortune, hitting the woodwork 33 times in all competitions.
The English International, who has capped 99 appearances for Liverpool, thought that had they not hit the frame of the goal on so many occasions, they could have ended in the top four.
He told the club’s official website, “With all of the shots that hit the woodwork we could have had 15 more points this season. That would have put us right up there towards the top four.”
Another factor which led to the Reds demise in the 2011/12 season was their inability to convert from penalty kicks. In total, they were awarded 11 spot-kicks in the entire season, while they only managed to convert from four of them.
The 27-year old believed that his side’s poor conversion rate was mainly due to the reason that they kept on rotating the kick-takers every time a player missed a penalty, instead of sticking with a specialist.
He added, “I don’t know why we’ve missed so many this season. Normally, if someone misses a new person has a go and then they go on a run of scoring.”
He also mentioned that he joked with his team-mates during the Reds home game against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 that he would take the penalty kick in case they got one in the game. It turned out that Liverpool did earn a penalty in the first half of the game, which was however
missed by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221.
Nevertheless, Johnson indicated that taking a penalty kick is never easy, and even the best players in the world miss them at times.
He remarked, “Penalties are a part of the game where anything can happen. Even the best players in the world miss them. It’s not easy to explain.”
