  1. You can't do it with a few short answers, like the ones posted so far.  Everyone seems to explain the method like they're reading it out of the "Heartland" series, which are books for teenage girls.  That's fine, but there's so much more to it than that, and gaining a real understanding of how the horse thinks and reacts and what the trainer should do to communicate properly is very intricate and detailed.  I would suggest finding a local trainer that knows how to do it and watching him.  Even Monty Roberts' books don't explain it clearly.

I have two different links to give you.  I've written both articles, and I hope they'll help you get a clearer picture of what join up involves.  It is not effective for every horse, but I've found it does help a frightened horse accept a trainer's handling, and it does teach a young horse some valuable things.  It does not create a "bond" with a horse...that is something that takes a lot of time and patience and growing together as you work with your horse.  Read these two articles:

  2. a horse is joining up with you when he points his inside ear towards you, when he licks his lips or chews or when he starts decreasing the size of his circles around you.

When you stop chasing the horse away, which you should do the second he shows any of these signs, he should turn and walk towards you. If he doesnt do this - again start chasing him away, and repeat the process until he does walk into the middle to you.

you dont need an expert when you're doing it - but it might help to go and watch someone that has done it before - or to read some books, or watch some dvds on it

  3. These are the four signs you are looking for:

    Lowering of the head.

    l*****g lips and chewing.

Inside ear is pricked towards you.

The horse is coming off the wall and is coming a little closer.

  4. You don't need a profesional with you rli, this is a method i have been using on my own since i was 9. The horse should genuinely look relaxed, his mouth shoul open and close and his head to lower. His feet shouldnt be very alert, they should be steady and calm!!

His out side ear should move to face the outwards direction.

I'm sure there are more things but i cant think of them right now!

    I hope i helped Alice L

  5. When attempting to achieve join up, longeing or using a round pen, you'll want to see the horse l*****g and chewing after a few rounds..... which says "I'm a grazing animal.... see?" and the underlying message is the horse is ready to submit to you. Once the chewing is observed, halt the longeing and turn your back to the horse. The horse should walk up to you on it's own. This is trust and submission. You'll also want to look for the horse's inner ear to be turned towards you during longeing, showing the horse is listening to you and alert to your body language and verbal commands.

  6. Okay well when you are doing a join up, the horse towards the end should lower his head and chew. Then from there push him a little harder and then turn around and take a few steps away, then wait for the magical touch of his nose. i have used join up on a lot of my horses and it has worked wonders.

  7. You are looking for l*****g, chewing, lowering their head and neck. They will keep their attention on you and will relax.

You do the join up in a round pen. The actual process is best learned from a trainer but can be learned out of a book. You just need a good one. I have done it before without an "expert" without a problem. At the time, I had just read about it and watched someone do it once.

Monty Roberts is the only NH person that hasnt gone completely off his rocker. I love his philosophy on horses.
