Question:

Joining a military branch?

I talked to recruiters from the National Guard and from the Air Force. What the guard recruiter said sounds to good to be true. He says I'll only serve 39 days a year... then says maybe...depending on the situation. I kept asking questions, like what situation? but he'd give me the run around and quickly change the subject. He promises so much I'm not sure what to believe. The AF recruiter was very straight forward. If I end up doing active anyway I'd rather just join the AF. What do you think? How many people end up doing only 39 a year in the Guard?

  1. Go guard, that is where our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush, needs you right now. You will get to see the action for 15 month tours. Plus, you will be much needed when the War on Iran begins.

  2. Consider the Navy. Ultimately, you should base your decision on what training each will give you. If the Army (which I was in) only wants you as a ground-pounder, skip it. If the Air Force or Navy will actually send you to school and give you some training that might be useful towards your career goals, then go for it.

No service is exempt from tours in Iraq. My nephew who is a dental assistant in the Air Force stationed in Japan ended up in Iraq doing something totally unrelated to his MOS (military occupational specialty).

  3. With the current war effort, I would not hold my breath on a 39 day a year commitment.  Why anyone would not want to be active if they were in the military, I just don't understand.  I can understand going into the reserves after you have finished 20 or 30 years of active duty.

  4. I myself am looking into joining the Air Force. The quality of life is better and it's as "safe" as you can get in the military.

  5. Exactly zero.
