I am going to be a freshman in college this coming fall I am thinking about joining the cheerleading team. Its not a huge team, they do many stunts and things. I have done cheerleading for 5 years in high school, all on varsity.

I don't have a split and the only tumbling i have goes as far as a front handspring or roundoff. I am a base.

Any tips to help me get in shape for tryouts in a month???

  1. you should workout by running or biking. eat a balanced diet too.  you should try to practice some tumbling and maybe try to teach yourself back handsprings and tucks. usually college teams are more competitive and require more tumbling than high school teams do. good luck.

  2. You were in high school for 5 years? I thought it was only 4.

Ok anyways, I've been on many squads and coached many squads, never have I been asked to do the splits at tryouts.

You should get into a tumbling class. What school are you trying out for? Work on your jumps in front of a mirror and stretch everyday.

Do you know what their requirements are?

  3. Tumbling definitely needs to be one of your priorities. Even the smallest squads have tumblers. Make it a goal to master a back handspring by the end of the year.

My suggest for you as a base is to work your core, especially if it has been awhile since you have stunted. Stunting requires the use of muscles that you don't use in everyday activity.

Stretching everyday will help increase your flexibility for jumps, but remember jumps are 50% flexibility and 50% strength. Leg lifts can help build leg muscle as well as hip flexibility. Squats and lunges are also good for your legs, as they are the power behind your jumps and stunting.

And even if you think you have the best motions in the world, practice them everyday. You can never be too stiff! Good Luck with Tryouts!!!
