Question:

Joining the Air National Guard With Surgeries and Arrest?

I have been considering possibly joining the Air National Guard for a few reasons: 1) To serve my country 2) To get the chance to do something exciting and 3) To get some of my college student loans reimbursed. I have taken an ASVAB in the past and got a 81 on the overall, but that test has expired and some things have happened in my life and I was wondering what the odds are of me being accepted into the ANG.

I have had a couple of surgeries for injuries brought on by playing hockey (shoulder arthroscopy and a sports hernia). Also back when I was 21 I was stupid and got convicted of impaired driving. All of this has been resolved and I am clear of any legal implications. I also am in better shape than ever in my life and can easily lift 100 pounds. Do you think there is any chance of me being accepted into the ANG if I took a "hot job" and left for basic right away?

  1. It will be very difficult.  Based solely on what you have provided here you will need at least 3 waivers.  2 medical and one morals.  Whether or not these will go through depends on the state that you are applying for.  The shoulder is not a big deal, but the hernia is another story.

Your best route at this point is to talk to a recruiter.  Either Air National Guard in your state or the Air Force Reserve.  The recruiters will best guide you in what may or may not be feasible.
