Question:

Joining the army as a good career for a young adult?

I'm 18, I finished high school last year and I'm not doing anything

I don't have any money to get into college, and I'm not a good enough student to get a scholarship. I'm not an 'academically smart' person. I like to use logic and reason, and apply myself to the real world.

I have been applying for local jobs everywhere, but I haven't gotten hired; it's more difficult than it seems, especially where I live.

I have self-confidence problems and I feel trapped. My parents are ashamed of me, and I want to leave. Joining the army is the only thing that makes sense to me. Is that a good choice? What can I do to get started?

  1. go for it I'm going and I'm 21 it will be something to think about but it's a good start when your young but do it for yourself not any body else or for what they tell you

  2. well at this point in time if you choose to join the army you may be sent to iraq or some other country in the middle east in due time. if you truly feel you wouldn't mind doing that then go ahead.

however a better solution then just joining the army is what about the coast guard? most of the time people are stationed in the US or in the north america area. its not as dangerous as the actual army but its probably a safer and wiser decision than the army.

also you may be doing things at sea and that could continue to use your logic and reason abilities.

if you wanna go in the coast guard check out: www.uscg.mil

check out the US army at: www.army.mil

good luck in whatever you do!

    ciao!!!

  3. I joined the Army out of high school for some of the same reasons. I loved the Army I got out to go to school and really miss it. Its a very respectable job look into it. The best way to get started is to go talk to a recruiter.

  4. I think it sounds like a good option for you. especially with the new post 911 G.I. bill that comes into effect Aug. 2009. It'll pay for you college and give you housing allowance if you decide to get out after at least 3 years. plus while you're in you can use military T.A. to pay for you classes with no cost to you except maybe books. There's other branches of military as well. it depends on what you want to do. talk to different recruiters and see what fits best for you. be careful with recruiters though bc they will try and get you in at all costs. read everything you sign and pick your job carefully.

  5. Yes, President Bush thanks you for your sacrifice in advance.

  6. try the coast guard .....

  7. I don't know if joining the army is the best choice right now; it really depends on what your long-term goals are. You have to consider the long run, never underestimate it. Personally, I would suggest you get into a trade or vocational school if money is your biggest concern-- mechanics, plumbing-- they pay much, much better than the army (plumbers do make really good money, not kidding-- 40 dollars an hour), and those schools are affordable with financial aid . The army is kind of a gamble right now. No matter how good of a soldier you are, you might end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and get killed. Plus, reserves are serving multiple tours, so you might be deployed overseas much longer than you'd think, raising that gamble. If you are set on the army, though, check their website. Remember: Make the long run determine your choice. You want to find a solid career, especially in this economy. Ask yourself: where do you want to be 10 years from now? Good luck, man.

And I don't mean anything offensive by this, but:  the computer you're using and any other technology like TVs, phones, cars, planes were made by academically smart people who used logic and reasoning to make stuff that changed the real world. Not all academics are boring people who read and write theses all day, but you are right kind of when you say that.

  8. the navy

  9. Yes, but realize, that in this day and age, you may have to  put your life on the line. You are 18, but a bullet can end your life, you are not invinsible.

  10. check out all of the branches not only the Army. Holla at the Air Force.

  11. I don't know about it being a "good" career, but with McCain in office it might be a short one.

but seriously, if I were you I'd consider other branches of the service first like the Coast Guard, National Guard, Air Force or Navy.  If you join the armed forces you don't want to just end up as a grunt with a gun patrolling the streets of Baghdad, - which is what the Army needs a lot of right about now.  I think your chances of learning something valueable are better in one of the other services - or maybe as a police officer.

To get started it shouldn't be hard to find a recruiter in your area...then just give them a call and I'm sure they'll just about break down your door to get you to sign up.
