Question:

Joining the girl scouts?

Hi, I'm 14 years old and really want to join the Girl Scouts. My Mom forced me to go when I was in 5'th grade, and in 6'th grade I quit. Now I'm in 9'th grade and want to pick it back up again. I see that they have girl scouts all the way up to age 17, but am I too old to start in a new troop? Like, would it be weird for someone of my age to just start being a girl scout? Thanks.

  1. There is nothing wrong with being a girl scout but since you quit in sixth grade, you probably missed many Junior years and Cadet years. You might have to start over Cadets or Juniors and be with younger people. You can always volunteer for girlscouts or just join. Either way you will have fun. Remember that many girls want to be a girl scout just like you but may not have the oppurtunity ever again. You could donate money to homeless girls so they can be in a girl scout troop or buy GS cookies and donate them to the elderly or kids in the hospital or anyone just to make them happier. I'm a girl scout too and in sixth grade and there are a lot of oppurtunities in it but also a lot of work. You can still be a loyal girl though by doing the right things. Have fun and always remember; every true girl is a Girl scout at heart.

  2. Go for it.  Most troops at the upper level have a hard time getting members.  All the Cadette and senior troops here have just 3 or 4 girls and have a hard time getting new members.  I'm sure they would welcome you.

  3. You know I am not sure. I wanted to go all the way through the ranks but my troop dissolved around 8th grade. You would have to contact the girl scout consul and find out if there are any girls your age still active that you can join, you may have to do some catch up on badges or something.

    Good luck.

  4. They would love to have you back! And at your age, many more travel and adventure opportunities are available.

If you have your old leader's number, give her a call - the troop might still be waiting for you. Or you can call the local council - there is a council finder in the link below.

There are other options besides an age level troop: You can be a independent, or Juliette Girl Scout, or you can help lead a younger troop (and get service hours).

Note to pamilla: It is Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), not Girl Scouts of America (GSA) - which gets us mixed up with Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

  5. Not at all.  You can start at any age, and you still have several years of quality Girl-Scouting to enjoy.  It's a very valuable life experience.

If anyone asks why you're starting up again now, you can always use the excuse that it looks good on college/job applications.  Getting your Gold / Silver Award as a Senior Girl Scout will definitely look impressive to anyone reviewing your applications.

  6. You are NOT too old!  I had a girl join our troop in 9th grade, and she's had a blast!  Actually, 17 isn't the cut off for Girl Scouts -- you can remain a Girl Scout until the September 30th after you graduate from high school -- so some girls may even be closer to 19.  Find a troop that does fun stuff and has goals.

  7. Wow!  I like the way your are thinking.

The following link is to the Girls Scouts of America.  There you can find training for what you are wanting to do.  Congratulation on your commitment to helping young girls.

    Way to Go!!
