Joining the military in your 30's?

I'm really considering joining the US Army, but I have some concerns. I want to enlist and go into public affiars. How hard is it to get a job in public affairs? What type of advab score would I need? What are the physical requirements for the job and where can I find basic resources to help me get into shape so I will be ready to go for the fitness test at the MEPS center?

  1. You need to ask about the age limit.

If you do go talk to a recruiter, be very very wary about what you're told.  The thing to remember is you're going to go wherever the Army is shorthanded.  You might request Public Affairs but if the Army is short handed in the MP's then that's where you're going.  In the Air Force, it's called needs of the AF.  I can only guess the Army has a similar policy.

  2. You can still join the Air Force if you have a BA in nursing.

  3. The Navy takes folks up to 35 years old.

  4. Talk to a Recruiter they hold PT classes and will help those who want to get in better shape do so.

@dded : 42 is the age cut off for the Army you have to be less than that when you graduate Basic.

  5. I think you can't be older than 32.

  6. not sure how hard it is to get the job.  best to ask the recruiter that one.  i'm sure different times different needs.  the asvab scores for 46Q  Journalist  GT:110  and 46R  Broadcast Journalist  GT:110 .  not sure is that is what you mean by public affairs.  most is at 110 anyways.  there is a detail on the work at http://www.usmilitary.com/3119/public-af...

last i checked in 2006 the age limit was raised for army 42.  waivers is needed for the older folks.  not sure what age it starts for waivers.  as for a fitness test, what i went through at meps was just to see if i can physically do things by observation done by an old doctor.  it's basic that you have the tests.  the requirements depends on s*x and age.  look at this chart.  it changes from time to time.  http://www.usmilitary.com/3119/public-af...

best thing to get into shape is to go to a gym/ymca to get you started and then go from there.  remember there is a difference between working out inside and outside.  also that weather is no excuse.  what is out there is what you run in.  never give up and push yourself.
