Question:

Joining the military...........?

I have been thinking long and hard for the past 2 years to join the navy. The timing seems right, and I am going to see a recruiter to discuss my options and what not.

What are the pro's/con's of joining the navy? I want to get a list together before making my final decision.

The only con's I can think of are hating my job, and missing my family. But the thought of job stability, and learning new skills, and what not I like..

Experienced people would be great.

  1. I think its a great idea i just joined the navy reserve so i could go to college at home. Reserve is always a posibility as well. Your are still enlisted and you can spend most of your time at home with your family, once a month for drill and two weeks a year is not bad all branches have reserve check into it.

  2. Pros:

    1. Travel

    2.Great benefits

    Cons:

    1. War

  3. Being away from home is the same with any other people wanting to explore and have an adult life. They go away from their families to find their own fortune and life.. The ones who usually stay home rarely maximizes their capabilities just because of the availability of jobs.. Missing your family is normal but its just life and you have to leave home sometimes even if you are a civilian. Technology has made it easier to contact them and show them how much you love them..

All jobs are the same, you either love them or hate them so don't worry that you will hate your job, what if you love it?.. It is only the people above you that you will hate.. You will be given choices of the jobs to take anyways before you go.. You may not get your first pick all the time but you will definitely get the one of the 5 that you pick..

Just make the most out of it.. Unless you became a pilot, a medic attached to Marines, MP(usually just defense), or a Seal, then actual combat may be scarce.. You might be assigned to a combat zone and might guard post but it is still not the same as going on patrols and being the hunter..

Good luck and whatever decision you make in life, just remember to always do the best of your ability and be kind and just to people because believe me, it will benefit you either right away or someday..

  4. con : war

  5. Basic Training is a ***** for the Navy. Prepare for your body to be pushed to the limit if you do join. However, after that happens, being in the Navy isn't difficult, since most of the jobs are easy. Plus, we aren't even fighting a war that's on water. Now's a good of time as any!

  6. I spent 6 years Navy. I spent 4 of those years at sea, but first I had 2 years of school.

First off. ask yourself why you want to join and what you want from joining.

Second, find a recruiter and talk with them. KNOW THIS: they can give you anything. As long as its in your contract they can give it to you. ie, early promote and signing bonuses. You also should be guaranteed a school. But first you have to take your asvab and find out what schools you can actually get accepted into. This means you HAVE to study to get a really good score. So, buy a book which will help you study and get a really good score. Anything 70+ will get you wherever you want pretty much.

    A few things to remember:

You hold the power to sign or not sign. Make them work for you.

NEVER go undesignated!!!!!! You end up painting the ship and you never get what school you want and never on time!!!!!

    Navy Pros and Cons

    Pros:

Traveling for free. I have seen over half the world for free. And I have been drunk in every place I have gone. You will see things that most people dont see. During the night in the middle of the Atlantic, the view is amazing.

    You make great friends!

    You dont get shot at.

You can make fun of the Air Force and Coast Guard!!!!

You can even make fun of Marines and the Army!!!!!

You get to sleep in a bed!!!

    Hot showers!!!

BOYS BOYS BOYS!!!!!! (since youre a girl =)

theres more but this is getting long.

    cons:

being away for 6 months makes it hard to have relationships.

    bullshit (thats in any branch)

well thats pretty much it. boot camp isnt hard either so good luck. I hope this helped.

  7. The navy provides a great education for those seeking one.  They have a lot of great programs that will help you when you leave the Navy.  However, the biggest draw back would probably be being away from your family for long periods of time, even in times of peace.

Might I suggest the Air Force?  They also have great opportunities without the long stays on a ship.

However, in this time of war, you will be away from home for a while no matter which branch you join.

  8. You should give thought to what you might wan't to do after your naval service. Some positions have direct comparisons and others do not.

Also you may find what you are looking for in other branches of service.

For example the army has its own landing ship tanks with army engineers.

I can say that the trade training given will provide you with opertunities in the future.

  9. pros: you get food and lodging. in theory you may get training in something you can take with you back to civilian life. You will likely get a chance to visit places you otherwise wouldn't have as a civilian. possible money for college after your hitch is up, possible help getting into a home after discharge.

Cons; being shot at, drowning, being on a cramped ship for a multi-month cruise. seasickness, lack of privacy depending on what type of vessel you may get posted to

learning new skills and what not? I have always been intrigued by the term "what not" it seems to have almost no real meaning!

  10. I don't know how set you are in the branch of the military but I know that the army has a nice program called active first. You go through basic and your job training and then you do one year active. After that year you get sent back home to complete the rest of your contract as National Guard.

I always say this program because it’s like a tester. If you don’t like active duty it’s only for one year and then you’re back home and then your only obligation would be one weekend a month. But say you do like it, you’ll still have to go home initially for the guard but then you can put your request in to go permanent active duty. It has to be approved by the company commander but I’ve never heard of them ever turning down that request. It’s always an option.

I joined 2 almost 3 years ago and loved every minute. I joined National Guard because I didn’t like the idea of being away from my family either. I still debate sometimes whether or not I would like to go active. The military have helped me in so many ways and I find it hard as to why I wouldn’t join if I had to do it again. The only con I see is the chance of going to war but if your comfortable knowing it’s a possibility I would say go for it. Just make sure you are completely aware of that possibility and ready to fulfill that obligation if needed.

    Best wishes to you.
