Question:

Joining the swim team

I'm going to be a senior this year and I'm thinking about joining the swim team. I'd like to do a sport because I have never done one before.

I tried to do the swim team as a sophomore (I thought it would be easy because I did it in middle school), but I completely embarrassed myself. I'd like to put that all behind me, but I'm really scared because I'm not good at all. Practice starts in a week.

Does anyone have some good tips in terms of training, confidence, and what to do before practice starts? Thanks!

  1. get a lot of sleep before practice also eat  a healthy breakfast.

  2. Be very attentive to what your coach has to say while teaching stroke mechanics (technique).  Be pro-active in your learning.  If your coach is not giving you enough attention, then ask for her/him to watch your stroke.

Go to extra practices especially if they are voluntary and few kids show up.  The fewer the kids in the pool, the more help you'll get from your coach.

No one on this board can give you advice that you can transmit to swim practice.  You need the help and observation of a coach.

Simply wanting something does not make you good.  Acting on those desires by, for example, seeking out good coaching, is a step to success.  So, once you know your strokes, you'll then start to develop.

  3. Believe u can. Im 27 and began swimming last year in college, now im like the second best of my swim team.

Will is the only thing you need.
