Question:

Joining the swim team?

I want to join my high schools swim team. I know how to swim, but I have never swam competitively before. I am going to be a junior next year, and my friend who is joining with me (same experience as me) is a junior too. I have experience with high school sports ( cross-country,track, cross country skiing) so I know I can handle it physically. What I want to know is what should I wear on the first day of practice? I only have 2-piece swim suits.... Is there any other equipment that I need? Any other tips for a first time swimmer? Thanks, Kelsey

  1. You should wear one piece i suggest going out to a cheaper store like target and getting a sporty looking one. The only other things that you might need would be a swim cap, goggles, and maybe a nose plug.

    Good Luck : ]

  2. Goggles- Start with the Woman's vanquisher. Speed sockets are better in my opinon, as the vanquishers did not work for me.

    $14.99- Vanquisers

    $25.99- Speed Socket

    $30.00 Speed Socket mirrored

Suit: Do not wear a 2 piece, well you can but it should NOT have any strings. If you do want to wear a two piece go with something like this:

Otherwise, stick with one pieces. I go with speedo. If you want a skimpier cut suit, go with Nike.

Have at least 3 practice suits and one for competition.

Cap: Latex or Silicone. Silicone is very comfortable, but latex stays on easier.

Only if you are really good and make varsity:

Get a tech suit. (Not to be used in every meet, only during championships)

    Examples-

    - Nike Swift

    -Speedo fastskin collection

    -TYR tracer light

    -Speedo aquablade (very old)

Equipment: Your team should have buoys, kickboards and all that with them.

    Tips:

-If your school has a clinic for swim before the season, then join the clinic. Or just join a seasonal team, or go find a USA swimming team. (Warning: Very hard and vigorous)

-Start lifting weights and stop when the season starts.

-Swim 2000 yds. then add 500 each month after.

-You may have the least experience, even if you had done other sports. So be prepared.

    - Swim coaches love to yell and push others.

    - Meets last all day long, so stay hydrated and also have some energy bars.

  3. i was on my high school swim team this year.

you need an athlete one piece, and a swim cap.

practices are everyday and long, at least at my school.

so if you are not commited dont join!

    compititions are fun and scary.

    good luck!

  4. swimming takes a crazy amount of upper body, lower body and core strength, so I would start working out very hard, also you will a regulation competition swim suit, goggles, and a cap,  but your swimsuit may pass for a couple of days. You will be WAY slower than anyone else who has even done it for a year, even if you know all four strokes, so be prepared to be the worst. Swim coaches yell a lot, and the meets last all day even if you may only be swimming once. But if you still want to do it even with all go for it. Finally, start taking lessons to ensure you know then mechanics of the strokes before you start.
