Joint favourites please punters at Monmore
Monmore hosted three long distance races over 630m as part of a 12-race card today.
Belles Reward was rewarded for a great start in the first of the three long distance races, winning the race by 5 ½ lengths over Wombourne Joe. Joe was slow from the traps, and battled against 9-4 race favourite, Romeo Chieftain on the second bend before breaking away from Romeo on the third bend.
Just behind Romeo in fourth place by a neck was Buffalo Vieri. Romeo In Oregon took fifth in the S1 race while Mateo finished last after running well in the early going.
This race was Belles Reward’s first S1 win.
Later on the card was an S2 race that featured 7-4 joint favourites, Shesariver and Dessies Ruby taking first and second respectively. Shesariver got off to a good start and kept the lead with wide running Ruby right behind.
Finishing in third place was Has Wings, who couldn’t keep up to the leaders, and finished two lengths behind Ruby. Romeo American was never in the race as he took fourth, six lengths behind Wings. Bernie Scripps took fifth, and 14-1 longshot, Girlswannahavfun, finished in last place.
The final long distance race of the day saw four racers with 7-2 odds match up against 3-1 race favourite, Mallogs Bruce, and 6-1 longshot, Dessies Marcel. Marcel predictably finished in last place, and after a slow start, but Bruce fared little better finishing in fifth.
The rest of the field made the race exciting as Tias Star and Wombourne Olivia battled for the lead until Olivia fell back, and Star took the lead near the line to win the race by a neck over Dromana Lulu. Tufty Dilemma ended up taking third over Olivia by ½ a length.
An earlier A2 race saw another pair of joint favourites take first and second as the 5-2 favourites, Clear Therainbow and Dereks Blueboy, took the top two spots. Therainbow got off to a slightly better start than Blueboy, but it was close all race with Blueboy losing out on first place by a length.
Taking third in the early race was Slim Amarillo by two lengths, and just behind him by a shoulder was Paddys Peg. Conger Doran finished fifth and Grifiths Lad took sixth after slow starts.
Monmore will feature three more A2 races tomorrow including the Victoria Lowe Chase, and an A1 race, Susan Holloway’s 50th Birthday Stakes.
