How cost effective is jojoba oil as a biodiesel? Unlike corn and soy, jojoba is not a primary food source and can be grown in arid climates. Can jojoba oil be used to replace petroleum for products such as lubricants, plastics, styrofoam, etc.?

  1. Yes, in general it replaces any petroleum oil, but processing will be different for some plastics.

Growing it in arid places does however require a lot of water from the ground. Adding more plants to produce more oil will put severe water stress on the environment.

Why? well it takes a lot more water to produce any oil than the amount of oil produced. If there is limited water to grow food crops, this crop will further compromise food production.
