Joline Hostman and Emily Selig share honours in the 200m breast-stroke final - Mare Nostrum, Canet
One of the most thrilling events on day one of the 2011 Mare Nostrum championship took place in the Women’s 200m breast-stroke, where both Swedish and Australian swimmers, Joline Hostman and Emily Selig tied the match with a victorious time of 2 minutes
and 27.27 seconds in Canet, France, on June 8.
Placed third in the 200m breast-stroke final was Marina Garcia Urzainqui after she touched finishing wall with a winning time of 2 minutes and 27.71 seconds.
Swimming Australia head coach, Leigh Nugent said, “There were also two real breakthrough swims tonight in Emily Selig producing a win in her first open international meet, and Kenneth To coming a close second to Laszlo Cseh in the 200m IM and breaking the
two-minute mark in the process.”
On the other hand, Nugent commented on the inspiring performances of Australian swimmers and stated that the performance from Matt Targett in the Men’s 50m freestyle final captivated the entire attention of the crowd.
Nugent told that the 2008 Olympic silver and bronze medallist swam with an immense amount of self determination and motivation in the corresponding event and captured the Men’s 50m freestyle title with a sterling time of 22.19 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Women’s 200m Individual Medley title was captured by French swimmer, Lara Grangeon with a winning time of 2 minutes and 14.52 seconds and Gabrielle Fagundez of Sweden took home the Women’s 200m freestyle crown with an outstanding time of 1
minute and 57.99 seconds.
Afterwards, Yosuke Miyamoto of Japan won the Men’s 400m freestyle event as he hit the wall in 3 minutes and 54.18 seconds to claim the golden crown. Finally, the Women’s 800m freestyle event took place, in which Michelle Weber snared the gold medal with
a victorious time of 8 minutes and 49.68 seconds. Meanwhile, Grangeon captured the silver title in the following event with a time of 8 minutes and 55.45 seconds and Mie Ostergaard Nielsen settled for bronze medal in a time of 8 minutes and 56.86 seconds.
