Jon Boat. What does Jon mean or where did it get the name?

I would like to know how the Jon Boat got it's name. Know what it is but was wondering about the source of the name.

Not all Jon boats were flat bottomed, there are v hulls, semi v' and others. But Jon boats are usually constructed of aluminum. Jon boat was a brand but now is typically used as a style. like Phillips head s***w driver is truly a star head.

Jon boats are flat-bottomed boats constructed of aluminum or wood with 1 to 3 bench seats. Their most useful purpose is for hunting due to the greater level of stability as compared with a V-hull aluminum boat; however they are quite suitable for fishing as well. Because the hull of a Jon boat is nearly flat, it tends to ride over the waves rather than cut through them as a V-hull might, thus limiting the use of the boat to calmer waters. Jon boats typically have a transom onto which an outboard motor can be mounted. They are simple, easy to maintain, and inexpensive with many options to upgrade.

Originally they were John boats, I think.  We in the Ozarks have used them for many years to float, fish and camp on gravel bars taking 2-3 days or more per trip on the White River and other streams in our area.  My folks have built many of them out of planks of wood because they are very simple to build with flat bottom and flat bow and sterns.  They have been around for centuries here and there around the world because they are a basic, easy to build shape, but I doubt if anyone really knows the origin of them.  They are not really good for rough seas (bigger lakes with lots of waves), but are ideal on small lakes, large ponds, and smoother creeks for fishing and duck hunting because they are so stable.  And, I doubt if any body really knows where the name for them comes from, either.  Happy trails (and happy float trips).  :)
