Jon Izagirre wins the stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia 2012
Jon Izagirre helped Team Euskaltel-Euskadi with its first victory at the Italian Grand Tour during the stage 16 of the race.
He completed the 174 kilometre race between Limone sul Garda to Falzes/Pfalzen in a quickest time of 4 hours and 2 seconds and overcame his major competitors.
The Spaniard escaped from a 10-man pack during the final climb of the race and gained a good 16 seconds lead over Alessandro De Marchi and Stef Clement.
The duo occupied the second and the third positions in the respective order while Mathias Frank of Team BMC and Jose Herrada Lopez of Team Movistar achieved the fourth and the fifth spots.
The 23-year-old opened his 2012 winning account at the individual time trial stage 2b of the Vuelta a Asturias 2012.
He also finished third during the Les Boucles du Sud Ardeche and the stage win at the Giro has now marked a perfect start to his 2012 season.
Tiralongo started riding professionally with Team Orbea in 2010 and spent a period of one year with the side.
He accepted an offer from Team Euskaltel-Euskadi in 2011 and currently rides with the team for his second consecutive year.
The cyclist was happy with the victory especially because of the fact that his team is having a dry Giro and the first victory came through Jon.
"I'm on a cloud, I'm so excited," Izagirre briefed.
"I'm happy for the team because we are working hard in this Giro and any of the nine of us here deserved the win”.
"A big win is very special. The first victory in Asturias really excited me, but winning a Giro d'Italia stage is amazing," he concluded.
